The sound of 90’s France best exemplified by Neon helmet wearing Daft Punk and illuminated cross carrying duo Justice, owes much to the pioneers: De Crécy, Cassius, Stardust (music sounds better with you) and The Superman lovers to name a few. Artists who perfected that brash, melodic and beautiful blend of music known as French Touch.

On Saturday July 25th that sounds hit these shores in the form of a DJ set by Étienne Bernard de Crécy, oft considered the Godfather of French House music. The set takes place in Hanger, Andrews lane, Dublin.

Should you go? Hell oui you should. Here we’ve put together 5 reasons why:

1. Am I wrong

Tap the image above to play the track ‘Meet your Maker’.

Like enough artists on Spotify and soon enough its circular grey ‘new album’ notification at the top of your phone fails to elicit much more than a shrug and a touch of regret for having liked one too many recommended artists.

Today though that harbinger of fresh music announced that Shlohmo’s album Dark Red had just landed on Spotify. Shlohmo, the L.A native should need no introduction but receives one due to being mostly slept-on this side of the Atlantic, bar a mid-week set in the Twisted Pepper last year.

His first LP Bad Vibes was an almost impeccable blend of hip-hop, glitch and jazz compositions that is now pushing four years old which gives pause for thought, how the fuck is Nicolas Jaar so big around here yet Shlohmo is not? Difficult to pronounce name maybe, too many consonants? Such things can be pondered elsewhere.

Dark red is a beautiful but barbed treat, like a journey through brooding towering landscapes where threatening clouds hang low but it never quite rains. The soundtrack to self-indulgent heartbreak.

Talking about the release, the artist said: “When I started working on Dark Red about two-and-a-half years ago, I had just moved back to LA and built a small studio in my apartment, mostly with my dad’s old gear from the ’80s. I had just lost some people close to me and was dealing with another loved one’s health issues. I was all over the place mentally, and I think it reflects in this record whether I like it or not.”

The only thing I did know going into it, was that I wanted this one to be loud, and not just loud but really really fucking loud. I wanted the sound of the thing to be devastating and violent. Recordings that force you to feel something even if that something isn’t good. I’m proud to have made something polarizing, a record that’s strong and undeniable even in its moments of pure anxiety and confusion. It’s tragic and painful at times, but that’s all part of it and I want that to be heard and felt. You don’t have to like it, just listen to it.”

Listen and decide if you like it here courtesy of The New York Times. The album is officially released on the 7th April and available on Spotify now.

Stefan Kozalla, aka DJ Koze (aka Adolf Noise, aka Swahimi, the Unenlightened) returns to Dublin to rock District 8 this Easter weekend. It’s been just 11 months since he last played Ireland (Life Festival) and a year since his last set in Dublin (a four hour triumph in the Button Factory) but this will be his first time since 2007 to play in the venue that was then called the Tivoli theatre.

‘This is going to be a good one’ is copy-pasted to every Facebook event with abandon but what is it about the countdown to Saturday that makes it feel that, this time, this platitude has never been more on point?

With is it about Koze?

Some excellent magazines have spilt ink trying to answer just that, so instead we decided we’d let the music speak. Here’s a timeline of some of the most iconic tracks from the illustrious career of the Unenlightened and a teaser of the goodies set to be spun on the night.

Damn, check that line-up! With Nas headlining Life 2015 with a performance of ‘Illmatic’ the rest of the rows could have been filled with One Direction, Hanson and Mongolian throat singers and we’d still have turned up.

But it’s not.

Instead what we’ve got is an all-star ensemble of talented sound makers who are set to rock the leafy grounds of Belvedere House this May.

Pantha du Prince, Kolsch, Kidnap kid and the hope that the ‘Surprise guest’ is hologram Tupac had us sold, but if you need convincing or just wonder who the hell Oneman is, we’ve put together this playable festival poster.
